I had to lie flat on my back to take this shot of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio. Fortunately I was up there early to capture the best light so there were few people around. The statue has now been voted one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World. It is quite easy to understand why when you are standing there with the whole of Rio laid out beneath you. I shot this photograph whilst touring Rustaq, a fortified market town north of the capital, Muscat. This group of friends was just returning from the Mosque and my eye was quickly drawn to the finely embroided hats they traditionally wear in Oman, locally called Kumma’s. Another early morning picture, this time at the Sunday market in central Athens. I could have composed a hundred shots - I probably did - but this was one of the unusual compositions that caught my attention. Loose chandelier crystals, what else? (Nikon D70; 2007)

I learnt afterwards that wandering along the beaches (or anywhere for that matter) in Rio with a Nikon and no bodybuards was a risky move. Ignorance can be bliss sometimes as I captured several wonderful scenes whilst the beach was being readied early one morning for a public holiday onslaught. (Nikon D70; 2007)
