The desert is incredibly beautiful, surprisingly full of life, but notoriously difficult to photograph. The best time of day is early in the morning when the sun is low and the shadows long. With the high perspective - this April 2003 shot was taken from the apex of another very high dune - and the feeding camels, this is one of my favourite desert compositions. Okay, so its a snap shot! But the image of the Treasury in Petra when it first appears out of the gloom is truly amazing. Short of taking over the whole venue for a professional photo-shoot, its difficult to know how else to capture the moment of discovery as you round the last corner. (Nikon F80, Fuji Provia, 2004)

The Arabian Oryx are a beautiful animal. I captured this herd early in the morning at their water-hole at the Al Maha resort near Dubai. The curved horns at times can echo the symmetry of the dunes, as I've tried to capture in this particular composition. (Nikon F80; Kodachrome Elite slide film; 2003)
I shot this composition of the wooden dhow at Bukha in the Musandam in December 2002. The lines of the abandoned boat, leading the eye to the distant fort with all its maritime significance, itself dwarfed by the sheer immensity of nature's mountains in the distance, truly captured for me the spirit and history of this remote community in Oman.
